What are the penalties for prostitution?

A defendant convicted of prostitution in Los Angeles may face the following penalties:
- First prostitution offense – 0 to 6 months in jail and/or a fine of up to $1,000.
- Second prostitution offense – 45-day mandatory minimum jail sentence to 6 months in jail and/or a fine of up to $1,000.
- Third prostitution offense – 90-day mandatory minimum jail sentence to 6 months in jail and/or a fine of up to $1,000.
If a defendant is accused of prostitution while using a car and within 1,000 feet of a residence, he or she may face license suspension for up to 30 days. Sex offender registration is not automatically required with a prostitution conviction and is not typically imposed.
